Volkswagen Delays Electric Golf Launch Until After 2028 Amid Platform Challenges
Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schafer confirmed the electric Golf will not debut before 2028, citing platform delays and a focus on newer EV models. The SSP platform, key to future EVs, will launch first with Audi and Porsche.

Volkswagen will not launch the electric Golf until the end of the decade, according to CEO Thomas Schafer. In an interview with the Financial Times, Schafer stated that Volkswagen does not plan to introduce an electric Golf in 2028. He explained that the company is satisfied with its current lineup and sees no immediate need for an electric version of the Golf.
Key Highlights
- Volkswagen will not launch the electric Golf before 2028
- Newer electric models like ID Polo and ID Cross will debut first
- Development delays affect the Scalable Systems Platform SSP rollout
Volkswagen's EV Strategy
This announcement follows the recent release of a teaser image for the next-generation Golf. Schafer's comments indicate that Volkswagen wants to focus on newer electric models, such as the ID Polo, ID 3 Neo, and the ID Cross. The ID Cross is expected to debut by the end of 2026. By delaying the electric Golf, Volkswagen aims to give these newer models more time to establish themselves in the market.
Schafer addressed the delay by noting the importance of achieving scale in electric vehicle production. He said, "It sounds like we take so long, but for us, we are looking at scale, and you have to have scale in this game, or you'll never make margin parity."
Platform and Market Challenges
Volkswagen faces increased competition from Chinese brands, which has led the company to reconsider electric vehicle pricing and platform costs. Schafer highlighted that the group is re-evaluating investments and materials to ensure profitability in the electric vehicle segment.
Development issues have also delayed the rollout of the all-electric Scalable Systems Platform (SSP). The SSP will serve as the foundation for the Golf EV and future models across the Volkswagen Group. The platform aims to bring price parity between internal combustion engine and electric vehicles. Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume has previously stated that SSP will feature 800V electrical systems, advanced battery technology, and new software architecture. This software is being developed in partnership with Rivian, a US-based electric vehicle manufacturer. Volkswagen and Rivian entered a joint venture in November 2024.
Earlier reports suggested the electrified Golf would be among the first SSP-based models. However, Schafer clarified that the initial SSP vehicles will come from Audi and Porsche. He said, "SSP, we will roll it out across the [VW Group] brands. We will start with the premium brands first... then us [VW] and on and on." The first SSP-based vehicle is not expected to debut before 2028.
