BMW iX5: Hydrogen-powered SUV by BMW will be ready by 2025

BMW is developing another Hydrogen-powered car, the iX5, at the company's Munich Research and Innovation Center (FIZ) and will be ready for delivery in the spring of 2025.

BMW iX5: The Hydrogen SUV

BMW may be moving forward with its electric vehicle plan, but the company, like a few others, isn't done with hydrogen just yet. Munich announced today that the manufacture of an iX5 Hydrogen vehicle has commenced, however, it will only be a small-series launch. The new car is being built at the company's Munich Research and Innovation Centre (FIZ), as expected, and will be ready for delivery in the spring of 2025.

'Hydrogen is a versatile energy source that will play an important role as we move toward climate neutrality,' said Frank Weber, member of the board of management responsible for Development. 'We are confident that hydrogen will become increasingly important for individual mobility, and we believe that a combination of battery and fuel cell electric motor systems would be a prudent long-term solution.

Why is BMW working on Hydrogen-powered Cars?

BMW believes that hydrogen may still have a future, owing to its lower reliance on rare earth metals than EV technology. 'Fuel cells do not require any vital raw resources like cobalt, lithium, or nickel, therefore by investing in this sort of drive system, we are also enhancing the BMW Group's geopolitical resilience,' added Weber. 'Our BMW iX5 Hydrogen test fleet will provide us with new and useful information, allowing us to give customers with an appealing product range once the hydrogen economy becomes a common reality.'

How will it work?

The base chassis for the new hydrogen cars will be supplied by BMW's Spartanburg USA plant, but a new addition means they will be able to house two hydrogen tanks, as well as a high-performance battery, eDrive-derived electric motor, and fuel cell.
