BYD, the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) maker, faces a slowdown in domestic sales after seven consecutive months of decline. The company is responding to fierce competition in China’s car market by introducing more models with fast-charging technology, aiming to attract drivers who remain loyal to petrol vehicles.
Key Highlights
- BYD faces seven months of declining domestic sales amid fierce competition in China
- The company introduces fast-charging batteries that reach 97 percent in under 12 minutes
- BYD plans 20,000 flash-charging stations in China and 6,000 overseas within a year
- Overseas sales rose 270 percent in Europe in 2025 and 156 percent globally in Q1
- BYD aims for half of new-car sales to come from overseas markets by 2030
BYD’s Fast-Charging Strategy
Executive Vice President Stella Li stated at the Beijing Auto Show that BYD’s new "flash" charging technology addresses range anxiety and charging time concerns. The company’s second-generation batteries can charge from 20 percent to 97 percent in under 12 minutes, even in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius (minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit). These batteries offer a driving range of 777 kilometers (483 miles).
BYD plans to build about 20,000 flash-charging stations in China and 6,000 overseas within the next 12 months. Li emphasized that this technology could help BYD compete directly with petrol vehicles and strengthen its position against rivals.
Market Performance and Competitive Landscape
BYD’s domestic sales surged from 420,000 vehicles in 2020 to 4.6 million in 2025, making it the world’s fifth-largest automaker by volume. In 2024, BYD overtook Volkswagen as China’s top carmaker, ending Volkswagen’s 25-year leadership. Last year, BYD surpassed Tesla as the world’s top EV maker.
Despite these achievements, BYD’s shares have dropped 25 percent since peaking in late May last year. In the previous month, the company reported its first annual profit decline in four years. Increased competition from companies like Geely and Leapmotor has pressured BYD’s domestic sales, prompting the company’s first major battery upgrade in six years.
Geely led new-car sales in China during January and February, temporarily moving BYD to fourth place. A Geely source indicated the company aims to become China’s top automaker within 12 to 18 months. Analysts note that BYD continues to understand consumer needs, but the competitive environment has intensified.
Overseas Expansion
While domestic growth has slowed, BYD is expanding rapidly overseas. In 2025, sales in Europe increased by 270 percent, and global sales outside China rose 156 percent in the first quarter. The company reported to analysts in March that it remains "highly confident" of meeting its 2026 overseas sales target of 1.5 million vehicles after reaching 1 million overseas sales in 2025.
BYD aims for half of its new-car sales to come from overseas markets by 2030. BYD’s recent moves highlight its efforts to maintain leadership in a highly competitive market by advancing battery technology and expanding its global presence.

CarBike 360 Says
BYD's bold push into megawatt fast-charging technology positions it as a frontrunner in China's brutal EV arena, where price wars and slowing demand challenge giants alike. By slashing charge times to rival refueling, BYD alleviates range anxiety and eyes global dominance. As infrastructure expands to 20,000 stations by late 2026, this innovation promises to electrify the future of mobility for consumers worldwide.
