Citroen India has launched the Basalt coupe SUV at an attractive starting price of ₹7.99 lakh (ex-showroom), making it the most affordable compact SUV in its segment. Bookings for the SUV coupe are now available, with a starting price of Rs 11,001 applicable till 31st October. While the Tata Curvv.ev was the first coupe SUV introduced in India, the Basalt holds the distinction of being the first in the internal combustion engine (ICE) segment. Priced significantly lower than the Curvv.ev, the Basalt offers an appealing option for the mass market, intensifying competition among its rivals. The automotive world now eagerly awaits the launch of the Curvv ICE on September 2nd to see how its pricing will compare to the Citroen Basalt.
Citroen Basalt Engine
The Citroen Basalt offers two engine variants: a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine delivering 80 bhp and 115 Nm of torque, coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission. The second option is a 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo petrol engine producing 109 bhp, available with a 6-speed manual transmission that offers 190 Nm of torque, or an automatic version producing 205 Nm.
Fuel Efficiency
Citroen claims the 1.2-liter naturally aspirated model claims to have a fuel efficiency of 18 kmpl, while the turbo petrol manual model offers 19.5 kmpl, and the turbo petrol automatic returns 18.7 kmpl.
Features and Safety
The Citroen Basalt boasts LED projector headlamps, 16-inch alloy wheels, wraparound tail lights, rear AC vents, and adjustable thigh support for the second row. It features a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with automatic climate control.
In terms of safety, the Basalt is equipped with six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), a rear parking camera with sensors, and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Customers can choose from seven color options, including five monotone and two dual-tone combinations.
Segment and Rivals
The Basalt enters a competitive market, taking on models like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, Honda Elevate, and Skoda Kushaq. Its immediate rival, the Tata Curvv, will soon expand its lineup with an ICE version to intensify the competition.
The Basalt is Citroen's fifth offering in India since its entry in 2021, joining the lineup of the C5 Aircross, C3, eC3, and the C3 Aircross, with which it shares its foundational architecture.
