Google android auto update brings 3D maps, Gemini AI and Dolby Atmos support
The latest Android Auto update introduces immersive 3D navigation, AI-powered assistance via Gemini, and enhanced audio with Dolby Atmos, redefining the connected car experience.

Google has announced a major update for Android Auto, introducing new features aimed at improving safety, entertainment, and productivity for drivers. These enhancements will be available through the Android 17 update and in vehicles equipped with Google built-in systems. The rollout will continue across supported cars through 2026.
Key Highlights
- Android Auto update introduces 3D Maps, Gemini AI, and Dolby Atmos integration
- Users can customize dashboards with widgets and Material 3 Expressive design
- Full HD video playback and seamless video-to-audio transitions added for supported vehicles
- Google Maps now features immersive navigation with live lane guidance and 3D building views
Key Features in the Android Auto Update
The new Android Auto version brings expanded personalization options. Users can now use ready-made widgets or create custom widgets using text prompts. These widgets allow quick access to contacts, weather updates, and even garage door controls. The dashboard can be tailored with Material 3 expressive design, which syncs fonts, wallpapers, and animations from the user’s phone for a familiar interface.
Google Maps has received significant upgrades. The navigation now includes immersive 3D views of buildings, overpasses, and terrain. Important details such as traffic lights, lanes, and stop signs are highlighted to improve driver awareness. The updated Maps interface adapts to various screen shapes, including ultrawide rectangles and circles, ensuring compatibility with different vehicle displays.
Enhanced Productivity and Entertainment
Android Auto now features deeper integration with Gemini AI. Users can perform tasks like brainstorming, learning, or remote work using voice commands. Later in 2024, Gemini Intelligence will be supported, allowing users to access apps, messages, emails, and calendars for contextual responses. The AI-powered Magic Cue feature, currently available on Google Pixel 10, enables quick, accurate information retrieval with a single tap.
Entertainment options have also expanded. Users will soon be able to watch 60 fps full HD videos on YouTube and other supported apps in compatible vehicles. Brands such as Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Skoda, Tata, and Volvo will support this feature. When the car shifts from parked to drive mode, video playback transitions seamlessly to audio, reducing distraction and maintaining continuity. This function requires apps that support background audio, such as YouTube Premium.
Audio quality receives a boost with Dolby Atmos integration. Supported apps and vehicles, starting with manufacturers like BMW, Genesis, and Mahindra, will offer a more immersive sound experience.
Improvements for Cars with Google Built-In
Vehicles with Google built-in will benefit from direct access to favorite apps, including games, videos, and meeting platforms like Zoom. Gemini and Maps will offer enhanced capabilities, such as quick car diagnostics and accurate answers to user queries.
Immersive Navigation in Google Maps will provide live lane guidance using data from the car’s front camera. These updates will be rolled out gradually, reaching supported vehicles by 2026.
