Maruti Suzuki Sells Over 1 Lakh Units in December With A Market Share of 36.48%, Sales Report For 2023 Out

As the automotive industry evolves, Maruti Suzuki stands as a beacon of resilience and success, achieving a monumental milestone by selling over 20 lakh vehicles in Calendar Year (CY) 2023. India's largest carmaker has showcased exceptional performance, navigating challenges and setting new benchmarks.

However, looking at the December 2023 sales figures, Maruti has seen a decline in its MoM and YoY sales. Let's delve into the detailed breakdown of Maruti's sales dynamics, uncovering the highs and lows that shaped its journey in the previous calendar year of 2023.

Maruti Sold Over 20 Lakh Vehicles In CY 2023

In CY 2023, Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker, achieves a remarkable feat by selling over 20 lakh vehicles between January and December 2023. The sales figures, totaling 20,66,219 units, set a new benchmark in the domestic automotive industry.

December 2023: Total Sales and Monthly Trends

Maruti Suzuki posted a total of 1,37,551 units in December 2023, encompassing domestic sales and total exports across the Passenger Vehicle (PV) and Commercial Vehicle (CV) segments. When compared to the 1,39,347 units sold in December 2022 and 1,64,439 units sold in November 2023, Maruti’s sales dropped both Year-on-Year (YoY) and Month-on-Month (MoM).

Mid-Size and Utility Segments: A Shift in Focus

With only Ciaz in the mid-size sedan space, the 489 units fall short when compared to the 1,154 units that were sold last year. Ciaz sold 10,995 units throughout 2023.

It is clearly evident that Maruti Suzuki has shifted its focus on the Utility segment that includes models like Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, S-Cross, and XL6. The Utility Vehicle segment witnessed a substantial growth, contributing 45,957 units in December 2023, up from the 33,008 units in 2022.

In FY 2023-24, this segment sold 4,60,588 units compared to the 2,60,172 units sold in the previous year. In CY 2023 utility vehicles contributed to an impressive  5,66,545 units. As being the only van maker for both PV and CV space, Eeco accounted for 10,034 units on its own with 1,36,010 units in CY 2023.

Domestic PV Sales and Commercial Dealerships

In December 2023, Maruti's total domestic PV sales reached 1,04,778 units, with a cumulative figure of 17,07,668 units in CY 2023. Despite a slight decline from the 1,12,010 units sold in December 2022, the focus on Utility vehicles still remains pivotal for the company.

Super Carry Shines in Commercial Space

Sold under Maruti Suzuki Commercial dealerships, Super Carry registered 1,714 units in December and 35,012 units throughout CY 2023, emphasizing Maruti's presence in the commercial vehicle segment. Maruti sold 4,175 vehicles to other OEMs and the total domestic sales (PV + CV + OEM) turns out to be 1,10,667 units.

Export Performance Shows Improvement

While domestic sales experienced a slight decline when compared to the 1,17,551 units sold in Dec 2022, Maruti Suzuki's export numbers showcase improvement. Exports increase from 21,796 units in 2022 to 26,884 units in December 2023, with a total of 2,69,046 units shipped throughout CY 2023.
