Second-Generation Kia Sonet Spotted Testing With Major Design Overhaul
The second-generation Kia Sonet has been spotted testing with a new design, updated platform, and expected interior upgrades. It will likely retain current engine options and may introduce a strong-hybrid variant, with a launch expected in 2027.

The second-generation Kia Sonet has been seen testing for the first time. The prototype, heavily camouflaged, reveals a major design overhaul that aligns the Sonet more closely with the larger Kia Seltos. The new Sonet will use the K1 platform, which it will share with the Syros. This platform is expected to improve safety and add more features to the compact SUV.
Key Highlights
- Second-generation Kia Sonet spotted testing with major design changes
- New Sonet adopts K1 platform shared with Syros for improved safety and features
- Expected to retain current engine options and may introduce a strong-hybrid variant
- Interior overhaul likely with larger 12.3-inch displays on higher trims
- Launch expected in 2027 with a price premium over current model
Exterior Design Changes

The prototype of the next-generation Kia Sonet appears bolder than the current model. The front fascia is wider and more upright, with a larger, more rectangular grille replacing the current smaller tiger-nose design. Slim lighting elements suggest a new split-headlamp setup, featuring sleek LED daytime running lights at the top and main headlamps positioned lower in the bumper. The front bumper looks more muscular, contributing to a stronger overall presence.
The side profile of the new Sonet is boxier, with a straighter roofline and taller windows. This change could provide more headroom for rear passengers. The prototype also features new dual-tone alloy wheels with a cleaner, modern design. The rear design was not visible during testing, but it is expected to have a flatter profile and updated lighting elements.
Interior and Features

The interior of the new Sonet has not been revealed yet. However, it is expected to receive a complete overhaul. Higher-spec trims may offer larger 12.3-inch displays. The current Sonet includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch fully digital driver’s display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, connected car technology, a 7-speaker Bose sound system, ventilated front seats, sunroof, keyless entry with push-button start, and cruise control.
Safety features are likely to carry over, including six airbags, a 360-degree camera, ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors, electronic stability control (ESC), and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). The advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), currently Level-1, may receive an upgrade in the new model.
Engine Options and Launch Timeline
The new-generation Kia Sonet is expected to continue with the same engine and transmission options. These include a 1.2-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. Kia is reportedly developing a strong-hybrid version, which could make the Sonet one of the first strong-hybrid SUVs in the sub-4-metre segment.
The current Kia Sonet is priced between Rs 7.30 lakh and Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India). The new model will likely be priced at a premium over the current version and could be launched in 2027. Key competitors for the Sonet include the Hyundai Venue, Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Maruti Fronx, Toyota Taisor, and Skoda Kylaq.
