Tata Motors Re-Enters South African Market with Future-Ready Passenger Vehicle Portfolio
Tata Motors re-enters the South African market with a future-ready lineup of cars and SUVs, prioritizing safety, innovation, and lasting community impact through new partnerships and skill development programs.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV), a subsidiary of Tata Motors, has officially re-entered the South African market. The Indian automotive brand marks the beginning of a new era for the company. Tata Motors has partnered with South Africa’s leading automotive group, Motus Holdings, to operate the vehicles and also invested deeply in the region’s automotive ecosystem. Currently, Tata has established a nationwide network of 40 dealerships and is planning to expand to 60 by 2026.
Commemorating on the news, a launch event took place at The Galleria in Sandtone, Johannesburg, where the Indian brand revealed its passenger vehicle portfolio, such as the Harrier, Curvy, Punch, and Tiago. Each model is designed and engineered to meet different perspectives of mobility needs for South African customers. Following Mahindra, Tata will become the second Indian automotive company to export vehicles to South Africa.
Tata Motors first came to South Africa in 2004
This is not the first time that Tata Motors has entered the South African market. They did it in 2004, when they first started exporting their mid-range hatchbacks, the Indica and the Tata Indigo. However, sales of these two vehicles did not meet expectations, and thus, the passenger vehicle business was halted in 2019. Now after 6 years of chaos, the company is back and brings a more mature lineup for African buyers.
This bold return was possible after witnessing the phenomenal growth in India. The brand has surged from 170,000 units sold in 2020 to over 560,000 units in 2025. This signifies a whopping 350% increase in the sale figure. This significant increase can be attributed to recent improvements in vehicle safety standards. Tata Motors’ all models are globally rated 4 or 5 stars in the prestigious New Car Assessment Programs, including Global NCAP and BNCAP.
