India's passenger vehicle market in FY2026 recorded sales of 47,05,056 units, marking an 8.4 percent increase year on year. Petrol vehicles led the market with a 47.48 percent share, followed by CNG at 21.98 percent, diesel at 18.08 percent, hybrids at 8.21 percent, and electric vehicles at 4.25 percent.

Top Models by Fuel Type
1. Petrol Segment Leaders
The Maruti Suzuki Swift was the highest-selling petrol car in FY2026. Its popularity is supported by a wide service network, light controls, engaging handling, and strong fuel efficiency. However, its engine lacks punch, and pricing overlaps with premium hatchbacks. The Maruti Suzuki Swift, priced from Rs 5.79 lakh to Rs 8.65 lakh, competes with the Tata Tiago and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios.
The Maruti Suzuki Baleno maintained strong demand due to its ride quality and spacious cabin. It is offered with a single naturally aspirated engine, and its AMT gearbox is less smooth than a CVT. The Baleno, priced from Rs 5.99 lakh to Rs 9.10 lakh, rivals the Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz, and Toyota Glanza.
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx ranked third in petrol sales, thanks to its crossover styling, ease of driving, and fuel efficiency. It is priced from Rs 6.85 lakh to Rs 11.84 lakh and competes with the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger.
2. CNG Segment Leaders
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga led CNG sales, valued for its practical cabin and strong value proposition. It is priced between Rs 10.76 lakh and Rs 11.83 lakh and rivals the Toyota Rumion and Kia Carens.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire continued with strong demand, especially among fleet buyers, due to good low-end response and a balanced ride. It was also the best-selling car overall in FY2026. Dzire CNG variants are priced between Rs 8.50 lakh and Rs 9.04 lakh.
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R remained popular for its roomy cabin and ease of driving. It is priced between Rs 5.89 lakh and Rs 6.42 lakh for CNG variants.
3. Diesel Segment Leaders
The Mahindra Scorpio range led diesel sales, known for toughness, off-road ability, and strong powertrains. Prices range from Rs 13.49 lakh to Rs 24.95 lakh. The Mahindra Bolero also saw strong demand in rural and semi-urban areas, priced from Rs 8 lakh to Rs 10.49 lakh.
The Hyundai Creta was the top monocoque diesel SUV, offering a roomy, feature-rich cabin. It is priced between Rs 10.79 lakh and Rs 20.05 lakh.
4. Hybrid Segment Leaders
The Toyota Innova HyCross led hybrid sales, offering a spacious cabin, strong air conditioning, and Level 2 ADAS. It is priced between Rs 26.30 lakh and Rs 31.30 lakh, with a claimed fuel efficiency of 23.24 kpl.
The Toyota Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara followed, both offering a claimed fuel efficiency of 27.97 kpl. The Hyryder is priced from Rs 16.72 lakh to Rs 19.99 lakh, while the Grand Vitara ranges from Rs 16.63 lakh to Rs 19.57 lakh.
5. Electric Segment Leaders
The MG Windsor led EV sales, offering a comfortable cabin and lounge-style seating. It is priced from Rs 14.10 lakh to Rs 18.60 lakh, with claimed ranges of 332 km (38 kWh) and 449 km (52.9 kWh).
The Tata Nexon EV continued strong demand, with a claimed range up to 489 km (MIDC) and real-world figures near 375 km. It is priced from Rs 12.49 lakh to Rs 17.49 lakh.
The Mahindra XEV 9e stood out for performance and technology, priced from Rs 21.90 lakh to Rs 30.50 lakh. The claimed range is 542 km for the 59 kWh battery and up to 656 km for the 79 kWh battery (ARAI).
Market Trends
Petrol vehicles remain the most popular choice in India, but CNG and hybrid models are gaining traction. Diesel models continue to see demand, especially in utility and rural segments. Electric vehicles are growing, led by models offering higher range and comfort features.
