Toyota has introduced the ninth-generation Camry to the Indian market, with a price tag of ₹48 lakh (ex-showroom). This latest iteration of Toyota’s popular premium sedan arrives over a year after its international debut, bringing with it significant design and feature updates, while continuing to offer a frugal petrol-hybrid powertrain.
The new Camry is priced ₹1.83 lakh higher than its predecessor, which was offered at ₹46.17 lakh. However, it retains a competitive edge as Toyota’s entry-level luxury sedan, undercutting its closest competitor, the Škoda Superb, priced at ₹54 lakh, by ₹6 lakh. It also positions itself as a viable alternative to luxury sedans like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine, which start at ₹54.40 lakh and ₹60.60 lakh, respectively.
Design and Platform
Built on Toyota’s TNGA-K platform, the ninth-generation Camry boasts improved stability and driving dynamics. The platform’s lowered center of gravity and seating position enhance handling while maintaining comfort.
The Camry’s exterior design embraces Toyota’s “hammerhead” styling philosophy. Its sharp nose, slim LED headlamps, and U-shaped daytime running lights give it a modern, dynamic look. A narrow grille integrates seamlessly with the headlights, while a repositioned Toyota logo and Lexus-inspired bumper design complete the refreshed front fascia. The bold character line along the sides, newly designed 18-inch alloy wheels, and ‘C’-shaped LED tail lamps contribute to its contemporary appeal.
Interior Upgrades and Features
Inside, the Camry showcases a revamped dashboard featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, complemented by a nine-speaker JBL sound system, a 10-inch head-up display, and digital key functionality.
Passenger comfort has been prioritized, with reclining and ventilated rear seats featuring controls in the center console. Up front, heated and ventilated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a panoramic sunroof with a retractable sunshade add to the luxury experience.
Safety Features
Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 suite equips the new Camry with advanced safety technologies, including:
- Pre-collision system with pedestrian detection
- Radar-based adaptive cruise control
- Lane tracing assist
- Road sign assist
- Automatic high beam
Additionally, the Camry comes with nine airbags, parking sensors at both ends, and a 360-degree camera system.
Performance and Hybrid Powertrain
The ninth-generation Camry retains its 2.5-litre petrol engine, now paired with Toyota’s fifth-generation Hybrid System (THS 5). This upgraded setup delivers a combined output of 230hp, marking a 12hp increase over the outgoing model. Fuel efficiency has also improved, with Toyota claiming a 30% boost in mileage, making it one of the most economical sedans in its class.
The Camry uses an eCVT gearbox, ensuring a smooth and responsive driving experience. As with previous generations, the new Camry is being imported via the CKD (completely knocked down) route and assembled at Toyota’s Bidadi plant in Karnataka.
Market Position and Outlook
Since its introduction to India in 2013, the Camry has established itself as a reliable and eco-friendly luxury sedan. The ninth-generation model, with its enhanced features and competitive pricing, is set to attract both loyal customers and new buyers looking for an alternative to higher-priced European luxury sedans.
The new Toyota Camry promises a blend of cutting-edge technology, fuel efficiency, and premium comfort, ensuring its continued relevance in the evolving Indian automobile market.
