Donald Trump Slams Elon Musk’s Tesla India Move as “Very Unfair” to U.S.

The US President Donald Trump isn’t holding back his criticism of Elon Musk’s plans to open a Tesla factory in India. During a Fox News interview, Trump slammed the move as “very unfair” to the U.S., pointing to India’s steep tariffs on imported cars—something he claims locks American automakers out of the market.

Meanwhile, Tesla’s been pushing hard to break into India, hiring local staff and scouting showroom locations in Delhi and Mumbai. To sweeten the deal, India recently cut import taxes on EVs to 15% for companies willing to invest $500 million and build a local factory.

But Trump’s not buying it. He argues that even with those changes, setting up shop in India still puts the U.S. at a disadvantage because of those earlier sky-high tariffs on American imports.

What’s surprising? Musk actually agreed with Trump’s take during the interview. The whole spat underscores the bigger trade tensions between the two countries, with Trump doubling down on his old stance that the U.S. should hit back with matching tariffs to keep things “fair.”
