The SP51 supercar, based on the 812 GTS, has been introduced by Ferrari. The Italian manufacturer has created its 51st special project vehicle for a Taiwanese customer, which boasts distinctive external and interior stylistic aspects.

Ferrari SP51: powertrain

The SP51 uses the same underpinnings as the 812 GTS and is powered by the same 6.5-liter, naturally aspirated V12 engine that produces 800hp and 718Nm. The SP51's technical details have not been released, although it is projected to sprint from 0-100kph in 3.0 seconds and achieve a peak speed of 340kph.

Ferrari SP51 Design

Some of the new external elements of the SP51 created by the Ferrari designing center include reworked headlamps, diamond-cut wheels, and the distinctive 'Rosso Passionale' color scheme. It also has a distinctive blue and white livery that covers the whole length of the supercar as an homage to the 1955 Ferrari 410 S race vehicle.

The SP51, unlike the 812 GTS, does not have a folding hardtop and hence stays roofless. Engineers incorporated front and rear vents to assist enhance downforce in order to make the SP51 as aerodynamic as possible.

The carbon fiber bodywork and the transverse-mounted carbon wing that works as a bridge between the two flying buttresses are also important elements. The inside of the SP51 is similar to that of the 812 GTS, but for the conspicuous red Alcantara trim.

Ferrari in India

The Italian supercar manufacturer has released the 296 GTB in India for Rs 5.40 crore (ex-showroom, India). Ferrari also introduced its new premium SUV, the Purosangue, which will arrive in India in 2023.

Toyota Taisor Launched in South Africa as Starlet Cross

Toyota has launched the Taisor in South Africa, but it goes by a different name there – the Starlet Cross. This model is based on the Maruti Fronx, much like the Taisor in India, but there are some key differences between the two.

Exterior Design

The South African Starlet Cross and the Indian Taisor share a similar design. Both models feature striking LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and tripod headlights integrated into the bumper. The grille design is akin to the India-spec Toyota Rumion, with a chrome strip connecting the DRLs.

Other common design elements include 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, chunky body cladding, and connected LED tail lights. However, the Starlet Cross offers two additional color options: black and blue, apart from the ones available for the Taisor in India.

Toyota Taisor Launched in South Africa as Starlet Cross

Inside, the Starlet Cross features a black and brown theme, while the Taisor in India has a black and maroon interior. Both models boast a similar dashboard layout and come equipped with a 9-inch touchscreen that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additional features include a heads-up display, wireless phone charging, automatic climate control, and push-button start/stop.

For safety, both vehicles are equipped with up to six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), a 360-degree camera, and rear parking sensors.

Engine Options

One of the significant differences between the two models lies under the hood. The Starlet Cross is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 105 PS and 138 Nm of torque. This engine can be paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission.

In contrast, the Taisor in India offers a choice between a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine (90 PS/113 Nm) and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine (100 PS/148 Nm). Additionally, the Taisor has an optional 1.2-litre CNG powertrain that produces 77 PS and 98.5 Nm, available only with a manual gearbox.

Pricing and Competition

The Toyota Starlet Cross in South Africa is priced between R 299,900 and R 359,300, which translates to approximately Rs 13.69 lakh to Rs 16.4 lakh. In India, the Taisor is priced from Rs 7.74 lakh to Rs 13.04 lakh (ex-showroom).

In terms of competition, the Taisor competes with the Maruti Fronx and Citroen C3 and serves as an alternative to sub-4m SUVs like the Kia Sonet, Maruti Brezza, Mahindra XUV300, Hyundai Venue, and Tata Nexon.

With these variations and similarities, Toyota continues to cater to different markets with tailored offerings, ensuring that both Indian and South African customers get a vehicle that suits their preferences and needs.

Impact of Union Budget 2024 on the Automotive Industry

Import duties on 25 critical minerals, including lithium, have been waived by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. This move is expected to lower the manufacturing costs of batteries and consequently reduce the prices of electric vehicles for consumers.

The Indian automobile industry largely reacted positively to the announcements made as part of the Union Budget 2024 in Parliament by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. During the Budget 2024-25 presentation, Sitharaman emphasised the central government's key priority areas, including employment and skilling, manufacturing and services, infrastructure development, and inclusive human resource development.

Despite proposing nearly halving the allocation for FAME II from FY24 Budget estimate of ₹ 5,172 crore to ₹2,671 crore for FY 25, the overall Budget 2024-25 received positive feedback from the automotive sector.

Incentives for Job Creation in the Manufacturing Sector

The government is incentivizing job creation in the manufacturing sector, which is expected to impact 30 lakh youth. Rajat Mahajan, Partner at Deloitte India, suggests that these additional skilled workers with disposable incomes will drive growth in the automotive industry, particularly in the 2-wheeler segment.

Industry Reactions to Union Budget 2024-25

Vinod Aggarwal, President, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), and MD & CEO, VECV:

"The Indian Automobile Industry welcomes the continued emphasis on economic growth with several announcements, especially the strong fiscal support for infrastructure in the next five years. The liberal allocation for rural development and infrastructure of ₹ 2.66 lakh crores is a welcome step that will boost the rural economy."

Manish Raj Singhania, President, Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations:

"The recent budget announcement by the Government of India brings a blend of optimism and challenges for the auto retail sector. The focus on 'Garib', 'Mahilayen', 'Yuval, and 'Annadata' highlights a comprehensive approach towards inclusive growth, which is commendable. The enhanced Minimum Support Prices for major crops and the launch of Phase IV of PMGSY are positive steps that will boost rural incomes and improve rural connectivity, thereby potentially increasing rural auto sales.

Adjustments in personal income tax, including increased standard deductions and relief for salaried employees and pensioners, are welcome measures that will enhance disposable incomes, fostering a more favourable environment for auto sales."

Pawan Munjal, Executive Chairman, Hero MotoCorp:

"The Budget 2024 is a visionary and pragmatic blueprint designed to propel our economy forward and foster a sustainable future. I am confident that this budget presented by Hon'ble FM Nirmala Sitharaman will stimulate consumption, attract substantial investments, and stabilize inflation. This budget successfully addresses the dual imperatives of economic growth and fiscal responsibility."

Nirmal K Minda, Chairman and Managing Director, Uno Minda:

"We welcome the Union Budget 2024-25 with its forward-looking initiatives to boost job creation with a focus on urban infrastructure and strengthening the manufacturing sector. The scheme linking job creation to the employment of first-time workers is a significant step towards fostering growth and inclusion. The incentives for EPFO contributions, benefiting both employees and employers for the first four years, will provide a substantial boost to our efforts in nurturing young talent."

ACMA (Automotive Component Manufacturers Association):

"ACMA is delighted by the measures announced towards employment, skilling, internships, and research. Reduction in customs duty to nil on critical minerals such as lithium, copper, cobalt, nickel, etc., will encourage cell manufacturing in the country and add to the evolving EV ecosystem in the country."

Tata Motors is reportedly developing a new flagship SUV, codenamed Tata Blackbird. Rumored to be a joint project between India's Tata Motors and China's Chery Motors, the Blackbird was initially intended to be based on the Chery Tiggo, re-engineered for the Indian market. However, this project was called off, making the Blackbird just an internet rumor for now. If launched, the Blackbird will be Tata's most premium SUV.

Design & Exterior

The Tata Blackbird is expected to feature Tata's IMPACT 2.0 design language, with futuristic elements such as a connected LED light bar at the front and rear. Following the design trend seen in the new Safari facelift, the Blackbird might also sport 19-inch or even larger 20-inch alloy wheels, enhancing its robust and stylish appearance.

Features & Safety

The rumored Tata Blackbird will be equipped with the latest safety and technology features, including:

  • Camera and radar-based Level 2 ADAS
  • Larger infotainment touchscreen and driver displays
  • Premium sound system
  • Multi-zone climate control AC
Tata Blackbird: A Look into Tata Motors' Rumored Flagship SUV | What to Expect?

It's expected to be based on Tata's OMEGA (Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced) Architecture, derived from Land Rover's D8 platform. This suggests the Blackbird could achieve a 5-star safety rating, similar to the Tata Harrier and Safari.

If launched, the Blackbird will be positioned in the 30 lakh plus price segment, above the current Tata Safari. It will compete with high-end SUVs like the Skoda KodiaqVW Tiguan, MG Gloster, and Toyota Fortuner, aiming to be Tata Motors' flagship product.

Price Expectations

The Tata Blackbird is speculated to be priced between Rs. 11.00 - 15.00 Lakh (ex-showroom) in India. In New Delhi, the on-road price is expected to start at Rs. 11.00 Lakh. The EMI starts at ₹20,312 per month with a down payment of ₹1,10,000 for a 5-year tenure at an interest rate of 8.75%, though this may vary depending on the bank.

The Tata Blackbird remains a speculative project with no concrete developments since the initial rumors. As its launch date remains uncertain, more details on features and pricing are expected to emerge if Tata Motors decides to proceed with this flagship SUV.

Skoda Cars Achieve E20 Compliance with ARAI Certification

Skoda India has achieved a significant milestone by becoming one of the first few brands to receive an official certification for E20-compliant engines. The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has granted the E20 fuel-compliant certificate for Skoda's 1.0-litre engine. This means the engine can run on a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol, aligning with the Indian government's mandate for all vehicles to be E20-compliant by April 2025.

Certification Details

Currently, the 1.0-litre TSi turbo-petrol engine, found in the Skoda Kushaq and Slavia models, has received this certification. This versatile engine is available with both manual and automatic gearboxes, providing customers with efficient and sustainable driving options. The 1.5-litre TSi engines are also set to receive E20 certification by the fourth quarter of 2024.

Wider Impact on Volkswagen Group

Since the Volkswagen Virtus and Taigun share the same 1.0-litre TSi engine, it is expected that these models will also receive E20 certification soon. This move demonstrates Skoda's commitment to aligning with global standards and policies on efficiency and emissions.

Official Statement

Petr Janeba, Brand Director of Skoda Auto India, expressed his pride in this achievement: "Along with making cars that lead in driving dynamics and safety, efficiency, and sustainability have also been at the centre of our product and production practices. TSi technology has been time-tested and proven for efficiency and emissions while being effectively powered. We have evolved and adapted this technology to various updates in standards and policies across the globe. The 1.0 TSi especially, with its three-cylinder turbo configuration tuned for power and efficiency is a versatile powertrain, and the E20 certification is a testament to this. We are confident of a similar outcome when the 1.5 TSi is tested, later this year."

Carbike360 says

Skoda India's commitment to sustainability and efficiency is evident through this certification. As the company continues to innovate and adapt to changing standards, it remains at the forefront of producing environmentally friendly vehicles. This achievement not only strengthens Skoda's position in the Indian market but also sets a benchmark for other automotive brands.
