Electric Car Sales Performance in 2026

In January 2026, electric car sales in India stood at 18,851 units. Sales dipped to 14,438 units in February but rebounded to 23,097 units in March. In April, sales slightly decreased to 22,677 units, according to VAHAN data. Tata Motors maintained its leadership by selling 8,507 units in April. Mahindra followed with 5,394 units, while MG Motor India recorded 4,978 units.
During the first four months of 2026, Tata Motors sold 31,604 electric cars. The company started the year with 8,410 units in January, dropped to 6,002 units in February, then increased to 8,685 units in March, and reached 8,507 units in April. Tata's sales were driven by models such as the Punch, Nexon, and the new Harrier EV.
Mahindra began 2026 with 3,889 units in January, decreased to 3,219 units in February, then rose to 5,651 units in March and 5,394 units in April. Mahindra's total sales for the period reached 18,153 units, supported by its "Born Electric" SUV lineup, including the BE 6 and XEV 9E.
Other Key Manufacturers and Market Trends
MG Motor India's Windsor EV and Comet EV contributed to a total of 19,036 units sold in the period. VinFast, a recent entrant, added 2,840 units with its VF6 and VF7 models. The company plans to introduce the VFMPV 7 soon.
Maruti Suzuki sold 2,667 units of its eVitara premium electric SUV during the same period, with sales increasing each month. Maruti Suzuki plans to expand its electric lineup with the YMC electric MPV, a sub-4 meter SUV, and an EV hatchback.
Hyundai ranked sixth with 1,707 units sold in 2026. BYD recorded 1,502 units, while Kia and PCA contributed 1,443 units and 111 units, respectively.
In fiscal year 2026, combined sales of EVs, CNG, and hybrid vehicles in India crossed 13.58 lakh units, making up nearly 30% of total passenger vehicle sales. Electric vehicle sales alone reached around 1,99,923 units, an 83.6% increase from 1,08,873 units in FY2025.
