Piaggio MP3 Scooter Set to Get an Airbag for Enhanced Safety on the Road

Piaggio patents an airbag system for MP3 scooters, potentially joining Honda Goldwing as the only airbag-equipped bike in production for added rider safety.
Piaggio has filed patents suggesting that they are developing an airbag system for their MP3 scooter. The company had previously displayed a prototype MP3 at the EICMA 2022 in Italy with airbag logos. With the patent filing, it is possible that the production version of the MP3 will include the safety feature in the future.
According to the patent drawings, the airbag for the Piaggio MP3 scooter will be situated behind the inner fairing, below the handlebar. In the event of a collision, the airbag will deploy within milliseconds, covering the rider's head and torso to minimize impact with the handlebar and reduce the likelihood of serious injury or fatality. The deployment process is expected to be similar to that of a car airbag.
Undoubtedly, the Piaggio MP3 scooter with the newly developed airbag system, if released, will come at a significantly higher price than the regular non-airbag version. Currently, the Honda Goldwing is the sole motorcycle model in production that features an airbag system.
