Volkswagen is gearing up to make a strong entry into the competitive sub-4m SUV segment with its upcoming model, the Tera. Built on the same platform as the Skoda Kylaq, the Tera will become Volkswagen’s smallest SUV upon launch. This compact SUV is set to target markets with high demand for versatile and rugged vehicles, especially in Latin America and India.
What’s New in the Tera
Recently spotted during off-road testing in Argentina, the Tera sports a unique design that sets it apart from Volkswagen’s existing compact SUVs, like the T-Cross and Nivus. Key design elements include a distinctive front end with LED headlights and top-mounted LED daytime running lights (DRLs), though it lacks the popular interconnecting LED strip that has become a signature on other VW models. The front bumper, however, draws some resemblance to the Euro-spec Tiguan, lending it a bold and prominent look.
The Tera’s side profile is clean and modern, inspired by the latest Tiguan. To maintain a minimalist aesthetic, the SUV features flat door panels without any bold creases or belt lines. Enhancing its rugged appeal are fender claddings and sporty 17-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, the Tera showcases edgy tail lamps connected by a sleek black strip, providing a fresh look that complements its adventurous stance.
Platform and Dimensions
The Tera is built on Volkswagen's MQB-A0 platform, a versatile foundation used for other models like the Polo, T-Cross, Nivus, and Virtus. With a wheelbase of 2,566m which is similar to the Polo, the Tera is compact but capably designed to tackle off-road environments. This off-road-ready capability should make the Tera particularly appealing in Latin American regions, where challenging terrain demands more durable vehicles.
Pricing
The sub-4m SUV segment is one of the most fiercely contested in the automotive market, and Volkswagen appears ready to make an aggressive play with Tera's pricing. Skoda’s Kylaq has already set a precedent in India with a starting price of INR 7.90 lakh, making it one of the most affordable options in this class. In line with this approach, the Tera is expected to debut in India at a starting price of around INR 8 lakh, positioning it competitively against other entry-level SUVs.
Performance
Both the Volkswagen Tera and its Skoda sibling, the Kylaq, will come with a 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine, generating 115 PS of power and 178 Nm of torque. Transmission options will likely include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. Though a single engine choice might appear limiting, it has its advantages. By focusing on one engine option, Volkswagen can streamline production, reduce costs in design, testing, and emissions compliance, and achieve economies of scale, potentially passing on these savings to the consumer.
A view with the competition
Volkswagen Tera will face tough competition in both international and domestic markets. Globally, rivals include the Renault Kardian and Fiat Pulse, while in India, Tera will go up against bestsellers like the Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, and Mahindra XUV3XO. Additionally, Skoda’s Kylaq will compete as a sibling rival, targeting the same segment.
Volkswagen’s entry into the sub-4m ICE SUV market comes at an interesting time. While electric vehicle (EV) adoption is rising, recent trends indicate a slowing demand for EVs in some regions, including Europe. This shift suggests that fully electrified goals may take longer to achieve than anticipated. For Volkswagen, the Tera represents an opportunity to tap into a volume-driven market, potentially boosting sales and contributing to the company’s broader comeback strategy.
