It started off by producing western musical instruments in Japan back in the year 1887, and in 1955 the brand set up its motorcycle division. While Yamaha still produces musical instruments and is also regarded as one of the leading brands in the field, it also forms one-fourth of the big four Japanese manufacturers in the two-wheeler industry. The brand has a rich legacy of motorcycle racing under its name, and it also gained popularity for its two-stroke motorcycles which were great in premier class racing. Yamaha became one of the top manufacturers of superbikes, as well as, motocross. Yamaha still continues to be one of the top brands in different forms of two-wheeler racing. Due to this success in racing, Yamaha has grown its name across the globe, making it one of the biggest two-wheeler producers in the world.
Before Yamaha motorcycles had started manufacturing locally and sold in India, the brand first, officially entered the country in the year 1985. It entered in a joint-venture with Escorts that lasted till 2001, after which the company became a 100 per cent subsidiary of Yamaha Japan. In the global market, Yamaha is considered to be a sporty brand, but in the company’s Indian portfolio, the brand has a huge range of two-wheelers in different segments. From 100cc commuter motorbikes to superbikes, Yamaha manufactures all sorts of bikes. To increase its sales volumes, the brand has also been focussing on scooters. Yamaha Fascino has helped the brand to grow immensely in the scooter segment, and the rest of the scooter range has also been performing well. The brand has the Yamaha Fazer, Yamaha FZ-S, Yamaha YZF-R15 and the Yamaha YZF-R3. The budget-friendly products include the Yamaha Saluto RX, Yamaha Saluto and the Yamaha SZ-RR.
