JLR To Begin Premium Cars Production in Tamil Nadu By Early 2026
Jaguar Land Rover is set to begin local assembly of its premium vehicles at a new facility in Tamil Nadu by early 2026.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the iconic British automotive brand owned by Tata Motors, has long been working with precision, performance, and cutting-edge technology. The brand that gave us Range Rover, Defender, and Jaguar has created a buzz among businessmen and corporate buyers. Tata Motors has helped the British brand to excel in its heritage and marvel with technology in India.
JLR has always tried to adapt its global strategy to meet the evolving demands of Indian consumers. The brand has always focused on producing cars on the Indian mainland. However, the next big move can completely knock down the operations at their newly built facility in Tamil Nadu by 2026.
JLR to Begin Local Assembly at New Tamil Nadu Facility
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is ready to take the next bold move in the Indian automotive market. The brand has decided to do the local assembly of its premium vehicles, like the Range Rover Evoque SUV, Defender, Discovery, and the Range Rover Velar SUV, in Tamil Nadu by early 2026. All these vehicles will be manufactured from completely locked-down kits at the Tata manufacturing facility in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu.
The carmaker has reported that they are heavily invested as part of a Rs 9,000 crore investment over five years. With a huge investment, the new assembly unit will be able to produce more than 250,000 units annually over the next five to seven years. The next-generation models of both Tata and JLR will be assembled in a new production facility by mid-2026.
In a recent interview, PB Balaji, Group CFO of Tata Motors, emphasized the strategic significance of this move:
"This move gives us a scalable, future-ready base as Jaguar Land Rover expands its portfolio in India," Balaji said, highlighting the facility’s role in supporting both current and future models, including potential electric vehicles under Tata’s Avinya brand.
The Ranipet plant will also carry out some operations from the Pune facility. This will help the brand to reallocate and enhance high-scale productions and increase logistics efficiency. With this new project, many will get an opportunity to work for the brand. Thus creating over 5000 direct and indirect jobs within the region.
JLR’s Current Plant in India and Its Capacity

At present, in 2025, JLR and Tata Motors assemble their luxury vehicles at the Pune Facility Production arena. Since 2011, this plant has produced models such as the Range Rover Evoque, Velar, and Discovery Sport.
The new plant in Tamil Nadu will give an upper hand to the brand, as it can produce more than 200,000 units annually, which will give more of a boost to the Indian economy, and we can see an upward trajectory from JLR in upcoming years. The initial focus will be on CKD assembly for JLR, with plans to gradually ramp up production and integrate Tata’s premium electric vehicles.
Conclusion
As the new project is still in draft, JLR will be pushing forward very soon, as this will mark a pivoted move for the brand in order to reduce costs and logistic supply and improve supply chain efficiency to meet the market demands.
