Tata Motors remains India’s EV leader while securing second place in overall passenger vehicle sales in April 2026.

Maruti Suzuki maintained its lead in India’s passenger vehicle market in April 2026, while Tata Motors secured the top spot in electric passenger vehicles and held the No. 2 position overall. Data from VAHAN shows Tata Motors sold 8,507 electric vehicles in April, outpacing Mahindra at 5,394 units and MG Motors at 4,978 units.

In total passenger vehicle sales for April, Tata Motors delivered 57,472 units. Maruti Suzuki led with 1,58,223 units, followed by Tata Motors and M&M at 54,897 units, and Hyundai at 47,345 units. Year-to-date from January to April 2026, Tata Motors remained second with 2,47,308 units, ahead of M&M’s 2,40,301 units and Hyundai’s 2,11,020 units. Maruti Suzuki continued as the market leader, selling 7,08,551 units during this period.
Electric Vehicle Market Performance
Tata Motors strengthened its leadership in the electric vehicle segment. Between January and April 2026, Tata Motors sold 31,604 electric passenger vehicles, capturing nearly 40% of the EV market. MG followed with 19,036 units, and M&M sold 18,153 units.
April saw electric vehicle sales at 22,677 units, a slight 1.8% decrease from 23,097 units in March. EV penetration increased to 5.7% of total passenger vehicle sales in April, up from 5.2% in March. Tata Motors’ EV sales declined 2% sequentially from 8,685 units in March. M&M’s EV sales dropped 4.5% from 5,651 units, while MG’s sales fell 10.3% from 5,550 units.
Overall Passenger Vehicle Trends
The overall passenger vehicle market experienced a slowdown in April. Industry volumes dropped 10.2% to 3,98,146 units from 4,43,201 units in March. Most major manufacturers reported sequential declines. Maruti Suzuki’s sales fell 9.7% month-on-month from 1,75,160 units in March. Tata Motors declined 14.4%, M&M dropped 14.3%, Hyundai decreased 5.2%, Toyota slipped 7.6%, and Kia fell 13.4%.
Among smaller manufacturers, MG declined 10.5% to 6,033 units, Honda dropped 6.7% to 5,326 units, Skoda-Volkswagen declined 3.2% to 8,862 units, and FCA fell 7.6% to 719 units. Renault and Nissan were exceptions, with Renault rising 12.2% to 4,079 units and Nissan growing 17.1% to 3,032 units. Fiat also increased sales by 10.7% to 249 units.
New Entrants and EV Growth
Newer and smaller EV manufacturers showed strong growth. VinFast increased sales by 66.6% to 1,231 units in April, just ahead of Maruti Suzuki’s 1,222 EV units. Maruti Suzuki’s EV sales rose 22.3% from 999 units in March. BYD grew 4% to 467 units. Hyundai’s EV sales remained steady at 512 units, while Kia declined 28.5% to 341 units.
The data highlights two trends: a cooling passenger vehicle market after a strong March and resilient demand for electric vehicles. Tata Motors’ EV leadership and its No. 2 position in the overall market provide a strong start for 2026 amid growing competition.
