Tata Motors to open exclusive showrooms for EVs in India

Tata Motors, the country’s leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is planning to open separate showrooms for its EV portfolio in India. The company will be the first traditional carmaker in India to have a dedicated sales channel for EVs, reflecting the growing demand and preference for this segment.

According to sources, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM), the EV subsidiary of Tata Motors, is finalizing its strategy for the new sales channel, including design, location, and number of outlets. The company aims to have the showrooms operational in the next six to 12 months, starting with 10 outlets in the top 10 tier-2 cities.

The move is part of Tata Motors’ ambition to double its e-PV sales to 100,000-110,000 units by FY24. The company currently sells five out of every six EVs in India, with models such as Nexon EV, Tigor EV and Altroz EV. The company has also cited inflation and regulatory requirements as the reasons for increasing the prices of its EVs from April 2023.

The separate showrooms for EVs will offer a more streamlined and efficient buying experience for consumers, as well as showcase Tata Motors’ leadership and commitment to electric mobility in India. The showrooms will have a distinct design and layout and will cost around Rs. 95 lakh to Rs. 1 crore to set up in a satellite city.

Tata Motors is not the only carmaker in India to focus on EVs. Other players such as Mahindra, Hyundai, MG Motor and Ola Electric are also expanding their EV offerings and infrastructure in the country. However, Tata Motors has taken the lead in establishing a separate sales channel for EVs, which could give it an edge over its competitors in this fast-growing market.
