The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is all set to embark on a groundbreaking project that could revolutionize travel between Varanasi and Kolkata. The upcoming Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway, also known as NH319B, promises to significantly reduce travel time and provide a seamless driving experience between the two cities. Let's delve into the details and features of this ambitious project.
The Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway, spanning a vast 610 km, is strategically planned to cut down the distance between the two major cities by approximately 80 km. Currently, the NH 19 route covers a lengthy distance of 690 km, but the new six-lane expressway will offer a faster and more efficient alternative.
The expressway will traverse through four districts each of Bihar and Jharkhand before entering West Bengal through Purulia district. This carefully curated route will connect Varanasi and Kolkata and provide easy access to several other cities in the region.
To expedite travel and avoid congested areas, the expressway will bypass Mughalsarai and take a more direct path, entering Bihar at Chand and exiting at Imamganj in Gaya. Additionally, NHAI plans to construct a five-kilometre-long tunnel in the Kaimur hills, enhancing the driving experience for travellers.
The Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway is undoubtedly poised to be a game-changer in terms of travel and connectivity. Once completed, it will revolutionize the road travel experience between these two significant cities and bring about a transformation in regional transportation.

As construction begins, excitement mounts for the grand vision of a truly connected India.
