Delhi Grants 15-Year Permit Validity for CNG Cabs, Offering Increased Lifespan

In a significant development benefiting taxi owners in Delhi, the Transport Department has announced the extension of permit validity for taxis running on CNG or other clean fuels. Now, taxis with a contract carriage permit can operate for a total of 15 years, providing much-needed relief to thousands of taxi drivers. 

However, this extension is contingent upon fulfilling all other conditions outlined in the Motor Vehicles Act, Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), and Delhi Motor Vehicles Rules (DMVR), as per official sources.

Delhi Transport Minister, Kailash Gahlot, expressed his satisfaction with the decision, emphasizing its contribution towards cleaner and greener transportation options. By granting this extension, the government aims to promote environmentally friendly modes of transportation while prioritizing the welfare and convenience of taxi owners and operators in the city.

The transport department's decision follows a careful evaluation of permit durations for various categories of taxis operating under the contract carriage permit. A glaring disparity was observed, with taxis registered under the City Taxi Scheme 2015 having a permit validity of only eight years, while other categories, including black and yellow cabs, enjoyed a validity of 15 years as per the Motor Vehicles Act.

To rectify this discrepancy and ensure fairness for all taxi owners, the transport department has extended the permit validity for CNG and clean fuel-powered taxis. This step is viewed as a positive measure toward promoting eco-friendly transportation alternatives and reducing pollution levels in the city.

Taxi owners and operators are urged to comply with all other conditions stipulated in the relevant Acts and regulations. Adhering to these prescribed requirements is crucial to maintaining the extended permit validity, as stated by the department.
