Government Allocates Rs 40,000 Crore to Remove Accident-Prone Black Spots, says Union Minister Nitin Gadkari

In an exclusive interview with ANI, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road and Transport Highways, revealed that the Indian government has allocated a staggering amount of Rs 40,000 crore to address the issue of black spots, or accident-prone areas, on the country's roads. 

This significant investment aims to enhance road safety and reduce the alarming number of road accidents that occur each year. Gadkari emphasized that approximately five lakh road accidents are reported annually in India, and the majority of fatalities involve individuals between the ages of 18 and 34.

Improving Automobile Engineering and Road Infrastructure

Gadkari identified several key factors contributing to road accidents, stressing the need for improvement in automobile engineering and road infrastructure. He specifically mentioned the implementation of six mandatory airbags in vehicles as a crucial safety measure. 

Additionally, Gadkari highlighted the importance of better road engineering, including the placement of traffic signals and signage, as well as the construction of strategically positioned underpasses.

Cooperation from the Public is Vital

While acknowledging the government's efforts, Gadkari emphasized that reducing road accidents requires cooperation from the general public. He emphasized that without the active participation and support of individuals, achieving significant progress in road safety would be challenging. Gadkari underlined the significance of promoting behavioural change among people in relation to road safety. 

Encouraging responsible and safe driving practices, as well as adherence to traffic rules, plays a pivotal role in mitigating the risk of accidents and preserving lives.

The government's substantial allocation of funds to tackle accident-prone black spots underscores its commitment to improving road safety across the country. 

By addressing both automobile engineering deficiencies and road infrastructure shortcomings, combined with promoting public awareness and behavioural changes, the Indian government aims to create a safer and more secure environment for road users.
