The Kia Carens MPV underwent Global NCAP testing twice, scoring 3 stars both times. While improvements were seen in child occupant safety, concerns remain regarding adult occupant protection, especially in models manufactured between May and December 2023

Key Highlights:
Kia Carens: In a recent crash test conducted by Global NCAP, the Kia Carens MPV scored 3 stars in overall safety. For those who are unaware, this is the second time, the Carens have scored 3 stars in GNCAP crash tests. Earlier when the MPV was tested in 2022, the score was the same as the recent crash test results. The Global NCAP tested two variants of the Carens MPV in the recent crash test, one of which was the unit manufactured in December 2023 (3 Star) and another in May 2023 (1 Star). Below you can check the detailed scores of the Carens MPV.
When the MPV was tested using the revised guidelines, it was observed that the driver's neck was not well protected, and the driver's chest, knees, and passenger's knees were only somewhat protected. On the other hand, the models manufactured between May 2, 2023, and December 11, 2023, received a 0-star rating for Adult Occupant Protection in the latest GNCAP crash tests.
The new model of the MPV manufactured after December 2023 demonstrated a significant improvement in Adult Occupant Protection. This model of Kia Carens scored a 3-star rating with an improved score of 22.07 out of 34. Global NCAP was dissatisfied with MPV’s scorings as they expected better results because the automaker provides 6 airbags as standard in the Carens.
The bodyshell integrity was considered not capable of bearing further loadings. The GNCAP also mentions that they didn't conduct side pole impact tests because of the 3-star rating. The road safety rating also noted that the MPV comes with seat belt reminders for both rows but only suffices the needs of the front row.
The MPV also fetched better scores in Child Occupant Safety this time. In round 1, the Carens got a 4-star rating with an impressive score of 40.92 out of 49. However, now that there is an improved restraint system present, the Carens have scored a 5-star rating with a score of 41 out of 49 in child occupant safety.
Highlighting some of the safety features of the Carens. The MPV gets 6 airbags, rear parking sensor, hill start assist, three-point seatbelts for all seats, rear disc brakes and ISOFIX mounts.
Despite Kia's effort to equip the Carens MPV with standard safety features like 6 airbags, its performance in Global NCAP tests remains mediocre. While there's commendable improvement in child occupant safety, the inconsistency in adult occupant protection across different manufacturing batches raises concerns. Kia must address these issues urgently to ensure the Carens meet the expected safety standards for all occupants.
