Get ready for the global debut of the 5-door Mahindra Thar in South Africa, with an anticipated launch in India in 2024.

Mahindra, the homegrown automobile manufacturer, has established a tradition of unveiling new vehicles on India's Independence Day, August 15th. In the past three years, this strategy has successfully highlighted Mahindra's Indian heritage and patriotic spirit.
For 2023, Mahindra has chosen to globally debut the 5-door version of the Thar, a highly anticipated model, with the event scheduled to take place in South Africa. This move is aimed at presenting a distinct design that sets it apart from Jeep's upcoming offerings.
Rajesh Jejurikar, the Executive Director (Auto and Farm Sectors) at Mahindra & Mahindra, confirmed that the 5-door Thar will not be launched in 2023 due to extensive waiting periods for the Thar, Scorpio N, and XUV700 models, as well as supply chain constraints.
However, the debut of the 5-door Thar is expected to take place on August 15th, 2023, while the official launch in India and other markets, including South Africa, is likely to occur in 2024. Testing for the 5-door Thar is currently underway, with several sightings of camouflaged prototypes.
Recent sightings of the 5-door Thar have occurred alongside test mules of the XUV300 facelift. Notably, one test mule showcased a single-pane sunroof positioned between the front and rear seats. While a panoramic sunroof would have provided a more seamless integration, the current arrangement suggests that the model is still undergoing development.
The 5-door Thar is expected to surpass the sub-4m threshold, making the inclusion of the smaller 1.5L diesel engine less likely. In the current 3-door Thar, this engine allows the vehicle to fall within the B-segment tax bracket and has the longest waiting period among other powertrain variants, exceeding 17 months.
South Africa holds strategic importance for Mahindra as a key market. By debuting one of its significant vehicles in this market, Mahindra aims to demonstrate its commitment and interest in expanding its presence there. Currently, Mahindra offers models such as the XUV300, XUV700, and Scorpio N in South Africa. Rumours suggest a redesigned 5-door Thar for global markets, featuring a distinct appearance that differentiates it from the Jeep Wrangler.
Mahindra has not yet revealed whether the global debut will showcase the expected model or a redesigned version. However, it is anticipated that the 2.0L petrol engine and 2.2L diesel engine will be available options. Additionally, Mahindra is likely to offer rear-wheel-drive (RWD) models, as seen in a previous spy video.
The 5-door Thar is expected to feature a platform variation based on the Scorpio N, with a length ranging from approximately 4.4 to 4.5 meters. Interior enhancements may include the addition of a front armrest with a storage box underneath, while the possibility of a third row could increase the seating capacity to seven or eight.
Mahindra's upcoming debut of the 5-door Thar in South Africa marks a significant milestone for the Indian automaker. While the global unveiling is set for August 15th, 2023, the model's launch in India and other markets is expected to take place in 2024. With its unique design and strategic focus on the South African market.
