Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Mercedes E-Class lead sedan sales in FY26 amid SUV dominance
Sedans held their ground in FY26 as the Maruti Dzire dominated mass-market sales and the Mercedes E-Class stayed ahead in the premium segment.

In FY26, Maruti Suzuki Dzire emerged as India's top-selling passenger vehicle, while the Mercedes-Benz E-Class led the luxury segment. This occurred even as sport utility vehicles (SUVs) accounted for 56 percent of all passenger vehicle sales, continuing their dominance in the market.
Key Highlights
- Maruti Suzuki Dzire sold 2,28,682 units in FY26, leading all passenger vehicles
- Mercedes-Benz E-Class topped luxury sales with 4,350 units and 22 percent brand share

Key Sales Figures and Market Trends

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire sold 2,28,682 units in FY26, marking a 38.6 percent increase over FY25. This figure made it the highest-selling model in the country, according to Jato Dynamics estimates for March 2026. The Dzire represented about 12.5 percent of Maruti Suzuki's total sales in India for the year.
On the luxury side, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class recorded sales of 4,350 units, a 22.3 percent rise from the previous year. The E-Class accounted for nearly 22 percent of Mercedes-Benz's total sales in India. For every E-Class sold, about fifty Dzires were sold, yet both models played significant roles in their respective companies' portfolios.
Top Models and Body Type Performance
The mass-market top five included the Dzire, Tata Nexon (2,14,930 units, up 42.8 percent), Hyundai Creta (2,03,150 units, up 4.3 percent), Maruti Ertiga, and Maruti Swift. The list featured a sedan, two SUVs, one MPV, and one hatchback, reflecting diverse consumer preferences.
In the luxury segment, the E-Class led, followed by the BMW iX1, which saw a 378.4 percent jump from a small base of 671 units in FY25. The Mercedes GLE, Mercedes GLS, and BMW 3 Series completed the top five. Sedans remained prominent at both ends of the price spectrum.
Body Type Growth and Segment Shifts
SUVs grew by 12.2 percent to 26.52 lakh units in FY26. However, sedans grew faster at 15.7 percent, outpacing hatchbacks, which rose by only 1.3 percent. Microcars declined by 11 percent. Sedans thus showed the fastest meaningful growth among major body types.
The midsize sedan segment, priced between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 20 lakh, now includes only four models: Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Virtus, and Skoda Slavia. Hyundai updated the Verna in March, while facelifts for the City, Slavia, and Virtus are expected later in 2026. No new entrants have been announced for this segment.
Fleet Demand and Market Dynamics
Fleet sales play a crucial role in sustaining sedan volumes. Maruti's Tour S, the commercial version of the Dzire, contributed about 60,000 units in FY24, close to 40 percent of that year's Dzire sales. Since early 2025, the fleet share for the Dzire may be as high as half of its total volume.
The Mercedes E-Class, mainly sold as a long-wheelbase model, remains the top luxury car due to strong demand from chauffeur-driven and private buyers. Sedans dominate fleet and ride-hailing services, reinforcing their steady sales despite the SUV trend.

CarBike 360 Says
Even as SUVs continue to rule the Indian passenger vehicle market, FY26 proved that sedans still have a strong audience. The Maruti Dzire’s class-leading volume and the Mercedes E-Class’ premium appeal underline that buyers still value comfort, efficiency, and a traditional three-box shape. Together, they show that the sedan story in India is far from over.
