Toyota Plans to Launch Three New SUVs, Including Next-Generation Fortuner, in India

Toyota has released the new Innova Hycross and the Hyryder SUV in India and plans to add more SUVs to its lineup within the next 2-3 years. A new SUV Coupe based on the Maruti Suzuki Fronx is expected to launch this year. Additionally, Toyota is working on the next-generation Fortuner SUV, which is slated for release by 2025.

Toyota is said to be developing a 3-row SUV for India based on the Corolla Cross SUV, which is currently available in global markets. The Corolla Cross is built on the TNGA-C platform, which is also used for the recently launched Innova Hycross. The upcoming Corolla Cross 7-seater SUV in India will compete against rivals such as the Hyundai Alcazar, Mahindra XUV700, and Jeep Meridian.

Toyota's Innova Hycross has a wheelbase of 2,850mm, whereas the 5-seater Corolla Cross model has a wheelbase of 2,640mm. In order to add an extra set of seats, Toyota may increase the wheelbase by roughly 150mm. The upcoming 7-seater model is expected to share engine options with the Hycross, including a 172bhp, 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 186bhp, 2.0-litre petrol engine equipped with Toyota's self-charging strong hybrid technology.

The next-generation Fortuner is expected to be unveiled globally in 2024, featuring a completely new design and an upgraded cabin, as well as a new engine option. Developed on Toyota's TNGA-F architecture, which is also used for the Tundra, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser SUVs, this platform can accommodate wheelbase lengths of 2,850-4,180mm. The new Fortuner will come with a new diesel engine with a mild hybrid system, including a 1GD-FTV 2.8L diesel engine with an integrated starter generator.

The upcoming Toyota SUV Coupe, known as A15 internally, will be built on the Fronx crossover's platform and is expected to feature design elements from the Yaris Cross. It will be available with two petrol engines: a 100bhp 1.0L 3-cylinder Boosterjet turbo and an 89bhp 1.2L Dualjet 4-cylinder petrol engine, both of which incorporate Suzuki's mild hybrid technology.
