India's electric four-wheeler (E4W) market experienced a slight contraction in December 2025, with total sales dropping 4.1% month-on-month to 14,870 units from 15,502 units in November, according to Vahan Dashboard data as of January 2, 2026 (Telangana excluded). JSW MG Motor dominated with a commanding 43.4% market share, selling 3,657 units despite a 7% dip, underscoring its leadership in the passenger EV segment driven by models like the Windsor EV.
The data reveals a competitive landscape where premium and mid-tier OEMs vied for supremacy. As brands gear up for a barrage of new launches, including Maruti e-Vitara, Tata Sierra EV, and Mahindra's expanded INGLO lineup. This report dissects each OEM's performance, blending Vahan stats with market insights for automotive stakeholders.
The month of December 2025 shows a record 40% market surge, witnessing intense competition in the Indian electric car market. Two new players have emerged from the list, giving tough competition to already established giants like Tata and Mahindra. These new players are VinFast and Tesla.

Tata Motors, once again, proved that they are the best players in the Indian electric car market. The brand has maintained leadership trends from prior months with strong EV presence via Nexon EV and Tiago EV. Broader EV sales data positions Tata as a volume leader, though specific Dec-25 E4W figures align with market totals. Their consistent 40% more shares earlier highlight resilience despite monthly fluctuations.
The brand was able to sell around 6,457 units in December 2025, which is 32 units more than its previous sales of about 6,425 units in November 2025. Tata Nexon EV was one of the best-selling electric vehicles in the country, sharing 43% of the total market in the Indian electric vehicle segment.
JSW MG Motor clinched the top spot with 3,657 E4W units in December 2025, down 329 units or 7%, from November's 3,985, yet securing 43.4% market share. The Windsor EV, India's best-selling electric car for CY2025, spearheaded this resilience, bolstered by the Comet EV and ZS EV, pushing cumulative EV sales past 100,000 units. Month-on-month stability amid a sector dip reflects strong ecosystem acceptance, including battery-as-a-service options and expanding MG Select luxury channels that grew 38% MoM.
Overall, wholesale hit 6,500 units for December, part of a 19% CY2025 growth to 70,554 units, defying a 14% YoY drop from December 2024's 7,516. Looking ahead, JSW MG plans the S5 EV (ZS EV successor) in 2026, rivaling the Tata Curvv EV and the Hyundai Creta Electric.
Mahindra & Mahindra registered 376 E4W sales in December, up marginally from November's 310, a 22% gain, and captured a 2.5% share in a shrinking pie. Born-electric models like the BE 6 and XEV 9e fueled this uptick, with EVs comprising 7.5% of total dispatches in January-October 2025 (38,464 units). The brand's INGLO platform underpins expansion, targeting five EVs by October 2026.
Talking about its cumulative retail sales, which surpassed 20,000 units in five months by mid-2025, boasting a 20% market share by August. Upcoming 2026 launches include the BE 6 Rall-E and XUV 3XO EV, challenging the Tata Nexon EV.
The most positive sales response came from the infamous Vietnamese brand, VinFast Auto. This is the second time VinFast Auto has entered into the top 10 electric OEMs in India, and for the 2025 season, the brand was spotted at number 4, beating Hyundai, Kia ad BMW in the electric car market sales. In December 2025, the brand was able to sell around 376 units, which is fewer when compared to other competitors.
However, being the newest member in the electric automotive landscape, within 4 months, VinFast was able to cover 2.5% of the Indian electric 4WS market. The brand was able to sell 68 more units than in November 2025, with 308 car sales.
BMW India sold 345 E4W units in December, plunging 34% from November's 470 to claim a 2.3% share. The iX remained the top seller, with cumulative EVs expected to cross 5,000 by mid-2025, along with 18% of sales. The iX1 led recent volumes. Jan-Sep 2025 saw 2,509 EV deliveries (246% YoY), 21% of car sales. Luxury EV sales grew 66% from January to May. The iX brings a facelift, and the i5 LWB is for the Indian customers in 2026.
Kia India, inferred in luxury EV trends, mirrors competitive sales around BMW/Hyundai levels, with prior months showing 313 EVs. The specific December 2025 E4W aligns with the market's premium uptick, driven by the EV6 and the upcoming Syros EV for early 2026 at Rs 15 lakh. Kia's rise to 7th in the CY2025 EV rankings signals accelerating electrification.

Hyundai clocked 263 units in December, down 46% from 488, for a 1.8% share. Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 drove volumes, with plans for six BEVs by FY2030 alongside 600 fast chargers. From January to October, the EV share rose notably, but the specific December EV breakdown was limited.
CY2025 focused on hybrids and EVs with a 30% retail mix globally, with India trailing in 2026 launches: The brand has already started offering the facelift versions of the upcoming Hyundai Creta Electric, Ioniq 9, and Ioniq 6.
BYD Motors shows a radical downfall in the sales figures in December 2025. The Chinese brand was unable to sell around 300-plus units in the 2026 edition. In November 2025, the brand sells around 440 units, while in 2025 the brand manages to sell around 237 units, a 34% loss in the electric Indian SUV segment.
Mercedes-Benz notched 68 sales in December, stable from 77, 0.5% share. EVs like the EQS and EQE contributed. From January to May 2025, sales were up 73% YoY with 501 units sold annually. Luxury EV momentum persists despite market contraction.
The portfolio includes the EQB, the EQC, the upcoming 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA EV, and the latest G-Wagon cabriolet as an option for the Indian customers.
Tesla managed 68 units, up 41% from 48 to 0.5% share. The best-selling Model 3 and Model Y are imports amid regulatory waits. No local production yet; global December records contrast with India's ramp-up in 2026.
