India's Motorcycle Sales Rebound: Feb Figures Show Renewed Demand Despite chip Shortage

The Indian two-wheeler market is one of the largest in the world, with millions of units sold every year. These two wheelers are mostly bought by India's population because large amount of people can't afford costlier bikes.

It is dominated by motorcycles, with popular brands like Hero, Bajaj, and TVS leading the way. Scooters also play a significant role, particularly in urban areas. The market has seen a shift towards more fuel-efficient and eco-friendly options in recent years, with electric vehicles gaining traction.

If we look at the list we can say that the top selling bikes are produced by Hero, Bajaj and TVS.

Experts anticipated an increase in domestic two-wheeler sales, driven by demand during the wedding season and an end to the chip scarcity. While chip supply problems improved in February, two of India's top three listed bike manufactures exceeded domestic sales projections, and passenger car sales increased due to the need for utility vehicles.

Domestic two-wheeler sales increased by double digits from a year ago, which is a sign of the strength of India's rural economy and demand from the country's largest consumption sector, which is broadly characterized as lower middle-income households.

Feb'23 GROWTH FIGURES

Bajaj Auto Ltd shows 27% growth in the domestic sales and The largest increase in domestic sales was reported by TVS Motor Co. Ltd. at roughly 28% on the other hand Hero Moto corp Ltb shows 15% growth in domestic sales. Market leader Maruti Suzuki India Ltd recorded a 10.1% increase in PV sector sales, while Tata Motors Ltd saw a 7.4% increase.

Commercial vehicle sales increased in double digits as fleet operators and logistics companies kept up their purchasing in advance of the April 1 implementation of new fuel pollution standards, which would result in higher costs for buses and trucks.

While monthly sales at Eicher Motors Ltd. increased by 24.5%, volumes at Ashok Leyland Ltd. increased by 26.7%. Tata, the market leader, reported a 2.6% decline in CV sales.
