Maruti Suzuki Leads the Car Sales in India for August 2023
In August 2023, India's car sales arena was ablaze with fierce competition and surprising outcomes. Maruti Suzuki Swift: The Swift was the best-selling car model in India last month, with 23,666 unit sales. The hatchback has shown a 7.5% MoM growth and a 9.4% YoY growth compared to August 2022. The Swift is available in both petrol and diesel variants, with manual and automatic transmission options.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno: The Baleno was the second best-selling car model in India last month, with 20,414 unit sales. The premium hatchback has shown a 2.9% MoM growth and a 14.6% YoY growth compared to August 2022. The Baleno is also sold as the Toyota Glanza under the partnership between Maruti Suzuki and Toyota.
Maruti Suzuki WagonR: The WagonR was the third best-selling car model in India last month, with 19,667 unit sales. The tall-boy hatchback has shown a 0.8% MoM growth and a 22.7% YoY growth compared to August 2022. The WagonR is offered in both petrol and CNG variants, with manual and automatic transmission options.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx: The Fronx was the fifth best-selling car model in India last month, with 17,124 unit sales. The subcompact SUV has shown a 3.8% MoM growth and a whopping 104.5% YoY growth compared to August 2022. The Fronx is the facelifted version of the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, which was launched in February 2023.
Tata Nexon: The Tata Nexon sold 15,620 units in August 2023, which is a 4.4% decline compared to July 2023 and a 3.5% dip compared to August 2022. The Nexon was the sixth best-selling car model in India last month. The Nexon is expected to launch its facelifted version in mid-September, which may boost its sales performance.
Hyundai Venue: The Hyundai Venue sold 12,442 units in August 2023, which is a 6.2% growth compared to July 2023 and an 8.7% growth compared to August 2022. The Venue was the seventh best-selling car model in India last month. The Venue has recently introduced the new ‘Adventure Editions’ of the Creta and Alcazar, and the ‘Knight’ edition of the Venue, which may have attracted more buyers.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire: The Maruti Suzuki Dzire sold 12,046 units in August 2023, which is a 0.5% decline compared to July 2023 and a 9.9% growth compared to August 2022. The Dzire was the eighth best-selling car model in India last month. The Dzire is one of the most popular compact sedans in India, offering a spacious cabin, a fuel-efficient engine and a low maintenance cost.
Tata Altroz: The Tata Altroz sold 10,472 units in August 2023, which is a 0.6% growth compared to July 2023 and a 6.8% growth compared to August 2022. The Altroz was the ninth best-selling car model in India last month. The Altroz is a premium hatchback that offers a stylish design, a feature-rich interior and a high safety rating.
Hyundai Grand i10 Nios: The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios sold 10,190 units in August 2023, which is a 5.7% decline compared to July 2023 and a 0.9% dip compared to August 2022. The Grand i10 Nios was the tenth best-selling car model in India last month. The Grand i10 Nios is a compact hatchback that offers a peppy performance, a spacious cabin and decent mileage.

Maruti Suzuki, the largest car manufacturer in India, has maintained its top position in the car sales chart for August 2023, with a total of 1,33,546 unit sales. The company has registered a 2.6% month-on-month (MoM) growth and a 16.4% year-on-year (YoY) growth compared to August 2022. Maruti Suzuki now has a market share of 42.37 per cent, more than the combined sales of Hyundai, Tata, and Mahindra.
The second spot in the car sales chart was occupied by Hyundai, with 53,830 unit sales. The Korean carmaker has shown a 6.2% MoM growth and an 8.7% YoY growth compared to August 2022. Hyundai has recently introduced the new ‘Adventure Editions’ of the Creta and Alcazar, and the ‘Knight’ edition of the Venue, which may have boosted its sales performance.
Tata Motors came third in the car sales chart, with 45,515 unit sales. However, the homegrown automaker has experienced a slight MoM decline of -4.4% and a YoY dip of -3.5% compared to August 2022. This could be due to a drop in demand for the outgoing Tata Nexon, which will be launched in its facelifted avatar in mid-September.
Mahindra was the fourth best-selling car brand in India for August 2023, with 37,270 unit sales. The company has posted a 2.9% MoM growth and a 26.5% YoY growth compared to August 2022. Mahindra launched the Rumion MPV last month, the rebadged version of the Maruti Ertiga.
The fifth spot in the car sales chart was taken by Toyota, with 20,970 unit sales. The Japanese carmaker has recorded a modest 1% MoM growth but a substantial YoY growth of 40.2% compared to last year. Toyota has also benefited from its partnership with Maruti Suzuki, which has resulted in shared mass-market products such as the Baleno-based Glanza and the Brezza-based Urban Cruiser.
The other car brands that made it to the top 10 list were Kia, Honda, Skoda, MG, and Volkswagen. Kia faced an MoM decline of -3.9% and a significant YoY drop of -13.9%, selling over 19,000 units last month.
Honda had a remarkable month, showing a substantial 62% MoM growth while maintaining a stable YoY performance.
Skoda registered a 2.4% MoM growth and a 2% YoY growth, selling over 4,300 units last month.
MG experienced a -16.5% MoM decline and a 9.5% YoY growth, selling over 4,100 units last month.
Volkswagen showed a 9.4% MoM growth and a whopping 102.9% YoY growth, selling over 4,100 units last month.
